Schloss Tüngeda, Medieval château in Hörselberg-Hainich, Germany

Schloss Tüngeda is a château in the Tüngeda district of Hörselberg-Hainich, Wartburgkreis, Thuringia. Built in 1582 for Hartmann von Wangenheim, it was remodelled in Neo-Renaissance style by Hermann von Krosigk in 1881. A park and a church stand beside it.

Schloss Tüngeda was built in 1582 for Hartmann von Wangenheim, who had acquired the Erffa share of the village in 1580. Severely damaged in the Thirty Years' War, it passed to the Uechtritz family in 1743 and 1771, and in 1881 Hermann von Krosigk rebuilt it in Neo-Renaissance style. Confiscated in 1945, it became municipal property in 1951 and was restored in 1991 and 2000.

The village church and the castle park stand next to the Schloss and are also worth seeing. The building passed to the municipality in 1951, and restoration work was carried out in 1991 and 2000. Since spring 2015 the leasehold has fallen back to the public authorities.

The castle is in private ownership again since the leasehold reverted in spring 2015, so visits are not generally possible. The park and the church beside the castle are open to view and are worth seeing. Check locally before planning a stop.

The 1582 building was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War, and decay set in afterwards. Hermann von Krosigk, who acquired the estate in 1881, had the castle remodelled in Neo-Renaissance style, so much of what a visitor sees today reflects that 19th-century work rather than the original construction.
