Sachsenbrücke, Road bridge in Westvorstadt, Leipzig, Germany
Sachsenbrücke is a road bridge that crosses the Elsterflutbett waterway and links Leipzig's city center to the western districts. The structure features reinforced concrete construction clad with limestone and now functions as a car-free passage for pedestrians and cyclists.
The bridge was first built in 1897 for a Saxon-Thuringian industrial exhibition. It was completely reconstructed in 1928 when the flood channel underneath was widened to improve water management.
The bridge is named after Saxon troops who switched sides during the 1813 Battle of Leipzig to join the allied forces against Napoleon. This historical reference remains embedded in the site's identity today.
The bridge has a flat, easy-to-walk surface suitable for visitors of all ages and abilities. It works best as a crossing during early morning or late afternoon when foot traffic is lighter.
In 2022, a visual art installation using warming stripes was created on the bridge surface to illustrate climate change. This colored display converts temperature data into a visual language that passing visitors can easily read.
