Grohner Düne, Residential building in Vegesack, Germany
Grohner Düne is a ring-shaped residential building with 16 stories featuring apartments arranged in a terraced layout on a tight site. The structure includes commercial spaces on its lower levels and was built using prefabricated construction techniques.
Construction began in 1969 on the site of a former pottery factory and was completed by March 1974. The use of prefabricated building methods made it possible to finish this large residential complex in just a few years.
The complex houses residents from many backgrounds who create an active shared life within and around the ring structure. How people use the shared spaces and outdoor areas shapes the everyday experience of living in this densely populated neighborhood.
The complex is publicly accessible and can be explored on foot, with the terraces and outdoor areas offering good viewpoints. The commercial spaces on the lower levels make it easy to get a sense of how the building is actually used.
The ring-shaped building is one of the largest continuous residential projects in Bremen and clearly shapes the neighborhood's skyline. Its visible system of terraces and balconies demonstrates a building approach that is rarely seen in this form today.
