Gneisenau-Kaserne, Military barracks in Horchheimer Höhe, Koblenz, Germany
Gneisenau-Kaserne is a military barracks compound located on elevated terrain overlooking the Rhine River near Koblenz. The installation spans multiple buildings arranged across a large area maintained for active military operations.
Construction of this military facility took place from 1936 to 1938 for German armed forces. Following World War II, French forces occupied and operated the barracks through the 1950s.
The barracks bear the name of General Neithard von Gneisenau, a Prussian military commander who contributed to the victory at Waterloo.
This facility is located at Alte Heerstraße and remains off-limits to the public due to active military use. You can view the grounds from outside perimeter points or from elevated vantage points in the surrounding area.
After World War II, the barracks provided temporary shelter for thousands of Polish displaced persons seeking refuge. These individuals were eventually repatriated as international relief efforts progressed during the post-war years.
