Falkenberger Rieselfelder

The Falkenberger Rieselfelder is a protected nature reserve in Berlin's Lichtenberg district, featuring open meadows, ponds, and patches of woodland spread across the site. Walking trails guide visitors through different habitats and observation points for viewing wildlife.

The site was established in the 1880s as a wastewater treatment facility, with the treated fields later used for agriculture. It was later transformed into a protected nature reserve dedicated to wildlife habitat.

The wetlands and ponds provide habitat for rare amphibian species that visitors can observe during walks through the reserve. These places have become an important refuge for species that depend on water and open ground.

Walking trails are the main way to explore this site, with marked paths suitable for most visitors and running through flat meadowland. Insect repellent and sturdy footwear are recommended, especially during warmer months when mosquitoes are more active.

Highland cattle graze the meadows as a management tool to prevent overgrowth and keep spaces open for wildlife. This traditional grazing practice creates conditions that benefit field larks and other birds dependent on open ground.
