Oberkirche, Gothic church in Arnstadt, Germany
The Oberkirche stands on an elevation at the southern edge of Arnstadt's old town, featuring a rectangular layout of 60 by 11 meters.
Franciscan monks initiated the construction of the Oberkirche in 1246, with the monastery receiving its first official documentation in 1266.
The interior contains early Baroque furnishings from the 17th century, including altar pieces, galleries, and baptismal fonts created by local artisan Burchard Röhl.
The church remains open for Lutheran services and displays numerous paintings depicting Biblical scenes across its gallery balustrades.
A bell tower was integrated into the north wall in 1461 to address structural issues, marking a significant architectural modification to the original design.
