Amazone zu Pferde, Bronze equestrian statue in Tiergarten, Germany
Amazone zu Pferde is a bronze statue in Tiergarten depicting an armed woman seated on a standing horse, raising a battle axe in her hand. The work rests on a rectangular limestone pedestal and is accessible through various pathways throughout the park.
Artist Louis Tuaillon created this sculpture between 1890 and 1895 in Rome and presented it at the 1896 Great Berlin Art Exhibition. Kaiser Wilhelm II later commissioned an enlarged version, which was placed in Tiergarten in the early 20th century.
The figure represents an Amazon, those legendary female warriors from ancient stories known for their courage and independence. Visitors can observe a powerful depiction of an armed woman on horseback that embodies strength and boldness.
The statue is located at an easily accessible spot in Tiergarten and can be reached from several park pathways. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes to comfortably walk the various routes throughout the park.
The original sculpture is housed in the Alte Nationalgalerie, while the version in the park is an enlarged reproduction. This duplication reveals how popular the composition was among Berlin's cultural leaders in the early 20th century.
