Global Stone, Stone sculpture in Tiergarten, Berlin-Mitte, Germany
Global Stone is a sculpture made of large boulders in the Tiergarten park in central Berlin. The installation was positioned so that sunlight falls through the arrangement during the summer solstice.
Sculptor Wolfgang von Schwarzenfeld brought the Kueka stone from Venezuela to Berlin in 1998 for his art project. In April 2020, this stone returned to Venezuela after the Pemón people demanded its return for years.
The name Kueka carries spiritual meaning for the Pemón people from Venezuela, who view the stone as part of their tradition. Visitors today see the empty spot where this stone once stood in the park.
You can reach the site via wheelchair-accessible paths near the Brandenburg Gate in Tiergarten park. The area is open year-round and easy to reach using public transport.
The arrangement of stones was designed to create a specific light pattern during the summer solstice. Since the central stone returned to Venezuela, the effect of the installation now changes throughout the year.
