The institution began operations in 1963 and expanded its presence in 2000 when the Museum of Film and Television opened at its current location.

The permanent exhibition includes original props from Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot, representing German cinema achievements.

The museum operates Wednesday through Monday from 10:00 to 18:00, with extended hours until 20:00 on Thursdays.

The museum holds the complete Marlene Dietrich Collection, containing personal items, photographs, and costumes from the German actress's career.
