Haus Huth, Heritage retail building in Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, Germany
Haus Huth is a commercial building at Potsdamer Platz constructed with a steel frame and clad in muschelkalk stone panels on its exterior. The structure was completed in 1912 and represents early industrial-era design principles.
This building was completed in 1912 and remained the only structure from the German Imperial period to survive World War II at Potsdamer Platz intact. Its survival through Berlin's division made it a solitary landmark near the Wall.
The building houses the Daimler Contemporary gallery, which showcases artworks from a major private collection in a historic setting. Visitors can experience contemporary art exhibitions within these early 1900s walls.
The building sits in the center of Potsdamer Platz with easy access to multiple public transportation lines serving the area. The surroundings feature pedestrian zones and parking areas for convenient visiting.
During Berlin's division, this building became isolated from the redevelopment happening elsewhere, creating a pocket of the old city frozen in time. When the Wall fell, its original features were carefully restored while the surrounding area was completely rebuilt.
