International Garden Expo 83, Horticultural exhibition in Munich, Germany.
The International Garden Expo 83 was a horticultural exhibition held in Munich in 1983 that transformed a 60-hectare area into what is now Westpark. The new park featured gardens, pathways, and pavilions dedicated entirely to displaying horticulture and garden design.
The exhibition ran from April to October 1983 and brought together roughly 170 contributors who displayed their gardening techniques and innovations. This temporary event laid the foundation for Westpark, which has served as public green space ever since.
Twenty-three international gardens displayed different national building styles, with four Asian countries creating permanent installations still visible in Westpark today. This variety shows how gardens express different cultural identities and design traditions.
A six-kilometer miniature railway connected five stations across the grounds, while three subway stations provided direct access to different park areas. Visitors can explore the site on foot or by using this convenient rail service.
Nepal had a hand-carved wooden pagoda built for the exhibition, which was the first of its kind in roughly 200 years created by Nepali craftsmen. This structure demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship and cultural value of this singular installation.
