Buchau, Island campsite in Staffelsee, Germany
Buchau is an island in Staffelsee measuring roughly 550 meters long and 170 meters wide, serving as a campground in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region of Bavaria. The site provides tent camping areas surrounded by water, offering visitors an isolated natural setting.
The municipality of Seehausen acquired the island in 1960 and opened a campground the following year to develop it as a recreation and tourism destination. This decision transformed the location into a significant leisure destination in the region.
The campground follows a strict tent-only policy that enables traditional camping without motor vehicles and creates a nature-focused outdoor experience. Visitors find a community that values simplicity and quiet time surrounded by natural surroundings.
The island is accessible by ferry from Seehausen, operating according to seasonal demand and most active during warmer months. Visitors should plan their arrival time in advance and note that the campground often fills during good weather.
About 140 of the tent sites are designated as permanent spots but must be completely dismantled after October and cannot remain occupied year-round. This creates an unusual rhythm between long-term campers and seasonal visitors.
