Burg Wigoldesberg

Burg Wigoldesberg is a medieval castle ruin near Eichelberg featuring remnants of walls and a ring ditch arranged across an oval area. The fortification sits on the Greifenberg at about 271 meters (890 feet) elevation and is reached through forest pathways in the surrounding woodland.

The castle was built between the late 10th and early 11th centuries and was connected to the Salian dynasty and the noble families of Zeisolf-Wolfram. These connections made it an important strongpoint in the medieval power structure of the region.

The site was closely linked to regional monastic development when the Counts of Lauffen established a monastery there between 1110 and 1118. This monastic center shaped the spiritual and social life of the surrounding region.

The site is reachable via several hiking trails that wind through the forested landscape with varying difficulty levels. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and prepare for uneven terrain on the approach.

Archaeological investigations in 2006 revealed an eastern mound rising 4 meters (13 feet) above the surrounding ground. This feature suggests a complex defensive system that reflects early medieval military architecture in the region.
