Wasserschloss Menzingen

Wasserschloss Menzingen is a castle ruin in Kraichtal with three wings and multiple stories. The preserved stone walls display Renaissance architectural features and are surrounded by water-filled moats that once served defensive purposes.

The castle was first mentioned in 1359 and was one of two fortifications in Menzingen. It was reconstructed between 1529 and 1539 under the direction of Peter von Mentzingen in its current architectural style.

The castle served as a residence for a local noble family and shaped the region's identity for centuries. Today, visitors can still observe the water-filled moats and walls that reflect its former importance in the area.

Access is provided through a stone bridge that replaced the original wooden drawbridge. Guided tours are available during heritage open days, so checking opening dates in advance is worthwhile.

A bombing on April 2, 1945 destroyed much of the structure and shapes its appearance today. The ruin clearly displays the scars from this air raid and documents how the war affected the building.
