Hiroshima-Nagasaki-Park, Memorial park in Neustadt-Süd district, Cologne, Germany
Hiroshima-Nagasaki-Park is a green space located in the Neustadt-Süd district between Aachener Street, University Street, and Bachemer Street. Water features and the Museum of East Asian Art define the park's surroundings.
The site served as the Maifeld for mass gatherings during the Nazi era and later became a debris disposal site after World War II. It was later restored as a symbol of the peace movement.
The memorial features an origami crane sculpture by Hannes Helmke that expresses peace and the desire for nuclear disarmament. Visitors find a space designed to encourage reflection on international understanding and the prevention of weapons.
The park is easy to reach by tram lines 1 and 7 and offers space for sports, picnics, and relaxation. Visitors will find shaded areas and open green spaces suitable for different activities.
The opening ceremony in 2004 brought together Kazuo Soda, a survivor of the Nagasaki bombing, and Japanese Consul Toshihiko Mochizuki. This gathering gave the site its special significance as an international peace statement.
