Theater am Großmarkt, Theater venue in Hammerbrook, Hamburg, Germany
Theater am Großmarkt occupies a converted market hall building and provides a large auditorium with more than 3,500 seats for performances and events. The complex also features a circular pavilion housing the ticket office and dining facilities, designed by an architecture firm from London.
The building originally opened in 1962 as a wholesale market hall for vegetables and fruit, designed by architect Bernhard Hermkes. The conversion into a theater took place in 2015, repurposing the protected structure for a completely new cultural use.
The venue has become a hub for international musical theater, where visitors experience productions in multiple languages and styles. Audiences travel across the city to see major shows that bring diverse performance traditions to this repurposed market hall.
The location is well connected by public transportation and surrounded by restaurants and cafés near the market hall area. Visitors should arrive early to explore the grounds and become familiar with the layout before the performance begins.
A British wizardry saga had its German premiere here in 2021 and attracted audiences specifically interested in that story. The production required special stage technology and effects that were installed specifically for this venue.
