Oberhafen, Harbor basin in HafenCity, Hamburg, Germany.
Oberhafen is a harbor basin in the heart of HafenCity with brick buildings, railway tracks, and waterfront spaces that reflect Hamburg's industrial past. Former warehouses now contain artist studios, exhibition spaces, offices, and the Oberhafenkantine restaurant serving regional dishes.
The basin started as a meeting place for Elbe River bargemen in the 17th century and shifted into a freight hub after the construction of Hanover Station in 1872. This transformation shaped the architectural character of the place and remains visible today.
Today it houses artists, filmmakers, and musicians who work and exhibit in converted industrial buildings. You can feel this creative energy as you walk through the streets and glimpse the open studios.
The area is easily accessible on foot and offers several cafes and restaurants for breaks. It is open to the public and ideal for a leisurely walk along the waterfront.
The location deliberately preserves existing structures instead of building new ones to keep rents low and protect the local artist community from displacement. This strategy makes it a rare example of affordable creative space in a modern port city.
