Hochbunker Anhalter Platz, Military defense tower in Am Riesenfeld, Germany
Hochbunker Anhalter Platz is a five-story octagonal shelter building in Munich with reinforced concrete construction and an anti-aircraft platform at the top. The structure was designed to accommodate about 450 people and displays the solid engineering of wartime protective architecture.
Architect Karl Meitinger designed this protective shelter in 1941 as part of Munich's air defense system. The building avoided post-war demolition because housing was scarce and later received protection status as a Bavarian architectural monument.
The structure reflects how Munich residents prepared for air raids during wartime. Visitors can observe from the outside how this massive concrete form shaped civilian protection efforts in the city.
The structure sits near Milbertshofen station and is easily visible from the street. Visitors can walk around the exterior and observe the building from the surrounding area for a good view of its design.
The building survived post-war demolition orders because Munich faced severe housing shortages at the time. Instead of being destroyed, it was later converted for residential use and eventually protected as a monument.
