Wasserspuren, Water installation artwork in Hann. Münden, Germany
Wasserspuren is an art installation featuring water elements spread across three central squares in the old town center. The work combines interactive fountains, sound-producing features, and artistic paving with bronze and ceramic elements throughout the spaces.
The installation was created in 2000 for the EXPO 2000 world fair as a collaborative project between artists, citizens, and students. This public art initiative demonstrated a modern approach to transforming city squares into shared artistic spaces.
The bronze and ceramic stones set into the ground reference the two rivers that have shaped this city and its daily life. Visitors can discover these markers scattered across the squares, showing how water has influenced the character and identity of the place.
The water features operate seasonally from May through September, and many elements can be activated by hand through buttons and levers. The squares are easiest to explore on foot, with clear views of the installations from different angles.
Some of the granite columns release water or mist when temperature reaches a certain point, making them function like responsive thermometers. Artistic humidity meters with weather vanes hang on the town hall walls, displaying moisture levels through a creative visual method.
