Mergelgrube bei Hannover, Protected nature reserve in Misburg, Germany.
The Mergelgrube conservation area contains limestone ponds and marshes spanning 21 hectares, with depths ranging between 30 and 40 meters.
The limestone quarry operations ceased in the late 1960s, transforming the site from an industrial facility into a designated conservation area by 2004.
The site functions as an ecological research center where scientists study 45 endangered plant species, including two varieties previously considered extinct in Lower Saxony.
Water levels in the quarry require constant regulation through pumping systems to maintain specific conditions for local plant and animal communities.
The former quarry contains nutrient-poor water bodies that support specialized reed beds and rare amphibian species, including the northern crested newt.
