Wälderhaus, Museum and building center in Wilhelmsburg, Germany.
Wälderhaus is a modern building with a larch wood exterior that combines a forest science center, hotel, and restaurant in one place. The structure uses solid timber as its main construction material in the upper floors and offers visitors different areas to explore.
The idea for this building came from the German Forest Protection Association in the 1990s and was completed in 2012. The project grew from a wish to help the public understand forests and responsible forestry practices.
The forest science center shows how woodlands matter to people through hands-on exploration that visitors can do themselves. You see here how timber and nature fit into daily life and why forests are important to this region.
The building is easy to reach by public transit and visitors can explore both the science center and hotel areas on foot. There is plenty of space for different activities, and the interior is accessible for people with mobility needs.
The building was one of the first in Germany to use solid timber as its main structural material on this scale, setting new standards in construction. This approach shows how modern design and sustainable materials can work together.
