Mauzenstein, Natural monument rock formation in Northern Black Forest, Germany.
Mauzenstein is a prominent sandstone rock formation in the northern Black Forest between Gaggenau and Bad Herrenalb. Its surface displays visible sedimentary layers and natural rounded shapes formed within the stone.
The rock once marked the boundary between Baden and Württemberg, and still bears carved markings from that period. It served as an important landmark for establishing borders in the region.
The rock formation serves as a visual landmark that hikers recognize and use to orient themselves while walking through the forest. People regularly stop here to rest and take photographs.
The rock is reachable from the village of Bernbach and involves a hike with moderate elevation changes. Sturdy shoes and a map or GPS device are recommended to navigate the route safely.
The rock contains spherical formations that geologists identified as natural concretions formed within Middle Buntsandstone. These rounded shapes developed through natural processes occurring over a long period.
