Mahlberg, Mountain summit in Black Forest, Germany
Mahlberg is a mountain summit in the Black Forest reaching 611 meters in elevation, making it the highest point in both Karlsruhe and Rastatt counties. An observation tower with a viewing platform can be accessed by climbing stairs, providing views across the surrounding valleys and plains.
The original observation tower was built in 1896 under Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden. After suffering wartime damage, the tower was rebuilt in 1961.
The mountain has long served as a landmark for people in the region, who have used it for orientation across generations.
The climb is relatively short, using stairs to reach the tower. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the path can become slippery in wet conditions.
The summit marks an unusual boundary between two counties: the eastern slope belongs to Malsch while the western slope lies in Gaggenau territory. This creates an intriguing location where two administrative regions meet.
