The park was created in 1814 when Grand Duke Ludwig I commissioned landscape designer Johannes Hess to transform the former castle moat area into a botanical garden. This transformation turned it into a central public space for the city.

The park is open from April to September and offers drinks and snacks at shaded spots under hornbeam trees. Free access through multiple entrances makes it easy to explore at your own pace without advance planning.
