Schlossgarten, Public park near Residenzschloss, Darmstadt, Germany
The Schlossgarten occupies the moat and bastion of Darmstadt's Residenzschloss. Its eastern section, opened in June 2014, has a pond with a fountain and a plant bed modelled on a historical example; the northern and western sections, completed in June 2017, hold a nature pond, flower meadows, perennial beds and trees, plus a stairway up to the bastion.
The park was created in 1814 when Grand Duke Ludwig I commissioned landscape designer Johannes Hess to transform the former castle moat area into a botanical garden. This transformation turned it into a central public space for the city.
The garden hosts events organized by students throughout the summer semester, creating meeting spaces between university and city residents. This use shows how the park has become woven into daily life in Darmstadt.
The garden lies in the castle moat and on the bastion, with a stairway leading up to the bastion. The eastern section opened in June 2014, the western in June 2017, and the southern section completed the moat in September 2023. In summer, food and drinks are served under hornbeams in the northeastern part of the bastion.
A nature pond and flower meadows create habitats for different species and feel like natural islands within the designed landscape. These ecologically planned areas contrast sharply with the formal grass areas nearby.
