Kornversuchsspeicher

The Kornversuchsspeicher is a five-story brick warehouse built beside the Berlin-Spandauer shipping canal, designed with large windows and loading platforms for grain handling. The building is being converted into office spaces and a restaurant with public areas for visitor use.

The building was constructed between 1897 and 1898 by the Hermann Streubel company and served as a grain testing facility. Its innovative storage methods significantly reduced food-related illnesses among the population.

The building shows how industry and trade shaped Berlin's development, reflecting the working life of the city a century ago. You can still see the robust construction and large windows that reveal the practical importance this place held for daily commerce.

The warehouse is located at Hedwig-Porschütz-Straße 20 and is easily accessible by water routes and surrounding streets. As it is still undergoing renovation, check current opening hours and access policies before visiting to ensure the spaces you want to see are available.

The structure featured five grain floors combined with four silos, employing revolutionary flat storage techniques using wooden partition walls. This approach was so advanced for its time that it greatly improved storage efficiency and minimized waste during handling.
