Günter Litfin Memorial, Memorial and watchtower in Mitte district, Berlin, Germany.

The Günter Litfin Memorial is a site with a reconstructed watchtower in the Mitte district. The tower demonstrates how border guards monitored escape attempts and controlled movement across this boundary.

Günter Litfin died in 1961 when he tried to escape from East to West and was shot by border guards. The memorial was built in 2003 to honor his memory and that of countless others who died attempting the same.

This place reminds visitors of Berlin's division and the people who lost their lives because of it. Walking here, you feel the weight of that separation and what it meant for families torn apart.

The site is easy to reach by public transport and sits directly on Kieler Straße near central Berlin. Be aware that opening times follow the seasons and vary throughout the year.

The watchtower was rebuilt according to historical plans and shows the exact construction methods used during border security operations. Visitors can climb to the top and experience the view from a guard's perspective.
