Rabenauer Grund, Nature reserve and ravine near Rabenau, Germany
Rabenauer Grund is a nature reserve in Saxony, centered on a deep rocky ravine carved by the Red Weißeritz River. Dense forest covers the valley slopes, and steep rock walls drop directly to the water below.
The valley was already in use by the 1500s, when a mill and its bridge were first recorded here. The area was later designated a protected reserve to safeguard its rock formations and wildlife.
An art trail along the valley connects the train station to the town center, displaying wooden sculptures inspired by local stories and the surrounding forest. The works sit in the open air and can be seen during a simple walk through the area.
Several hiking trails run through the reserve, following the riverbank and crossing the forested slopes above. The easiest starting point is Rabenau train station, where marked paths lead directly into the valley.
The name of the river, Rote Weißeritz, comes from iron oxides that once turned its water red, even though no trace of that color remains today. This gave the valley its distinctive identity long before it became a protected area.
