Schloss Lauenstein

Schloss Lauenstein is a Renaissance castle that stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the Müglitztal valley. The building combines medieval fortress elements with Renaissance features, including a baroque garden and spacious courtyard.

The castle was founded as a fortress in the 13th century and has shaped the landscape of the Ore Mountains region ever since. Major renovations in the 16th century transformed it from a stronghold into a Renaissance palace with new architectural features.

The castle houses the East Ore Mountains Museum, which displays regional history including mining traditions and the lives of noble families. Visitors can walk through rooms that show how people worked and lived in this area.

The castle is open daily to visitors and easy to reach by car or public transport. You can explore all areas of the grounds, including rooms, gardens, and towers, on foot.

The castle preserves largely unchanged medieval cellars that reveal how the fortress functioned in its earliest days. The Renaissance gallery from 1609 is particularly noteworthy, featuring distinctive round-arched portals and decorative volute gables that catch the eye.
