Große Wallanlagen, Park on historic ramparts in Hamburg, Germany
The Große Wallanlagen is the western section of Hamburg's 17th-century ramparts, laid out as a park between Dammtor and Stintfang. It forms part of Planten un Blomen and the Alten Elbpark. Of the 21 bastions, only the Rudolphusbastion survives in part; the Bismarck-Denkmal stands on the former Bastion Casparus.
The ramparts were built in the 17th century as part of a defensive ring designed to protect Hamburg from military attacks. When they lost their military purpose in the 19th century, the fortifications were gradually turned into public green space.
The park is easy to reach on foot and lies close to several metro stations in central Hamburg. The paths are wide and flat, making it straightforward to walk through without any special preparation.
Of the 21 bastions named after sitting councillors, only the Rudolphusbastion survives in part. On the site of the Bastion Casparus, the Bismarck monument was erected in 1906. Street names such as Holstenwall, Glockengießerwall and Millerntor still trace the course of the ring.
