Fackelträger-Säule, Cultural heritage monument in Südstadt-Bult, Germany.
The Fackelträger-Säule is a tall stone column at the northern shore of Maschsee topped with a gilded torch-bearer figure. The structure was designed as a public artwork standing along the waterfront promenade.
The monument was created in 1936 for the opening of Maschsee, based on a design competition won by sculptor Hermann Scheuernstuhl. Its completion took longer than planned before it was fully revealed to the public.
The inscriptions on the column reflect ideas about work, health, and strength that were important to people at the time. Today the monument stands by the water and serves as a gathering point for visitors exploring the lakeside.
The monument stands directly by the water on a large public plaza that is easy to reach on foot. The location offers free access and is a good spot to pause and explore the lakeside area.
The gilded figure at the top weighs around 1000 kilograms and required considerable technical effort to mount on the column. This heavy gilding made the artwork particularly vulnerable to weather damage and has needed regular restoration over the years.
