The Christmas market at Thurn und Taxis Palace fills the entire courtyard with wooden stalls selling regional products and holiday decorations from local producers. The space is decorated with lights and seasonal ornaments throughout.
The palace was once the seat of the Thurn und Taxis family, who managed the postal system across Europe and shaped commerce and communication for centuries. The location later became a public venue and now hosts this seasonal market.
The market has run since 2001 in the courtyard of St. Emmeram's Palace, the Thurn und Taxis family seat. Around 100 traders work some 130 stalls, among them turners, blacksmiths, woodcarvers, candle-makers, crib-builders, potters and broom-binders. Each day the Fürstliches Christkind greets visitors three times; Gloria von Thurn und Taxis reads the Christmas story and sings carols with the band Sacco & Mancetti.
The courtyard is easily accessible on foot and offers enough space to walk between stalls, though it can get crowded during late afternoon hours. Warm clothing is advisable since you will spend time outdoors during the cold season.
Since 2014 the princely palace park has been open to market visitors on four days a week, a part of the grounds that was closed in earlier years. The market itself has run since 2001 and draws around 300,000 visitors a year, according to figures given at the 2017 opening.
