Georgenkirche

Georgenkirche is a church building in Rotha that combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque style elements into a balanced composition. The octagonal tower with its curved dome forms a distinctive focal point.

The building was founded in 1101 as a Romanesque basilica with a pillar structure and shaped the townscape for centuries. A fundamental transformation of the choir area followed in the early 1500s in late Gothic style.

The organ by Gottfried Silbermann shapes the acoustic character of the church and demonstrates the high craftsmanship of the 18th century. Visitors can experience the quality of this instrument directly during concerts.

The church is open during weekend services and hosts regular musical performances for visitors. Groups and individuals can arrange overnight stays in the vicarage with advance notice.

The interior displays a remarkable collection of tombs from the von Friesen family spanning several centuries, reflecting the regional history of the area. A restored triumphal cross from 1510 hangs on the wall and still shows the craftsmanship quality of that period.
