Kurgarten Bad Reichenhall, Spa park and architectural heritage monument in Bad Reichenhall, Germany

Kurgarten Bad Reichenhall is a landscaped park laid out from 1868 by Munich court garden inspector Carl von Effner as a free landscape garden rather than a formal court design. A dedicated spa gardener cultivated southern ornamental shrubs, plane trees and sweet chestnuts. The park holds a covered promenade (Wandelhalle) and a graduation house (Gradierhaus), both protected under Bavarian monument number D-1-72-114-50.

From 1868 the Munich court garden inspector Carl von Effner laid out the park as a landscape garden rather than a formal court design, planted with plane trees, sweet chestnuts and southern ornamental shrubs. A salt-water fountain erected in front of the graduation houses sprayed 100,000 litres of brine into the air daily. In 1878 concerts moved here from the Axelmannstein garden, and a covered promenade and music pavilion were built.

The park's concert tradition began in 1868, when Munich conductor Josef Gung'l formed an 18-piece orchestra and obtained a music stage. Concerts moved into the Kurgarten in 1878, when a covered promenade and a music pavilion were built; Carl Hünn led 28 musicians there. From the same year the park was lit for the so-called Italian Nights, an attraction still held today.

The park lies northwest of the Hotel Axelmannstein, between the Gradierhaus and the site of the neo-baroque Königliches Kurhaus built by Max Littmann from 1899. The Wandelhalle and Gradierhaus are protected monuments (Bavarian list no. D-1-72-114-50). The grounds are level and laid out as a landscape garden, so paths can be followed at an easy pace.

The park's northeast corner held swings and a bowling alley, one of Bavaria's first children's playgrounds; adults played croquet and lawn tennis nearby. In April 1917, prisoners of war planted vegetables in the flowerbeds. The salt-water fountain built in front of the graduation houses sprayed 100,000 litres of brine into the air daily.
