Leinawald, Nature reserve in Langenleuba-Niederhain and Nobitz, Germany
Leinawald is a nature reserve in Langenleuba-Niederhain and Nobitz with deciduous forests, wetlands, and riparian areas covered by native beech and oak. The terrain spans several hundred hectares and supports different habitats for wildlife and plants.
The reserve was officially protected in 1961 to safeguard its natural habitats. Archaeological finds from the Copper Age near the former Elisabeth Spring indicate that people have lived in this region since prehistoric times.
The name Leinawald refers to the Leina stream that runs through the area and shaped its landscape for centuries. Visitors can observe how the water and its surroundings have defined the local character.
The area has marked trails for hiking and cycling that pass through different parts of the protected zone. The L 2460 road provides direct access and helps visitors navigate the region.
The area is home to Märchensee, a water-filled former quarry that is linked to author Karl May's childhood memories. Many visitors overlook this surprising connection to local storytelling traditions.
