Schirmfabrik Brauer is a four-wing factory building in Aachen with reinforced concrete skeleton construction. The structure has rounded corners, dark cornices, a flat roof, and large rectangular windows that define its functional industrial character.
The factory building was designed in 1928 by Josef Bachmann and Alexander Lürken for umbrella manufacturing. The original business, founded in 1882 by Emil Brauer Senior, had become one of the region's largest umbrella producers by that time.
The building shows features of the Neue Sachlichkeit movement and reflects how early 20th-century factories were designed with functional ideals. Its industrial forms reveal the architectural thinking of that era about work and production.
The building now houses the Ludwig Forum for International Art and is open to visitors. Keep in mind that the interior has been transformed with modern art exhibitions, and little of the original factory equipment remains visible.
The production hall in the courtyard features a specially designed shed roof that provided optimal lighting for umbrella manufacturing. This thoughtful construction shows how precisely the factory was planned for its specific purpose.
