Hohenfriedberg-Kaserne, Military barracks in Bad Freienwalde, Germany.
Hohenfriedberg-Kaserne is a military barracks complex on Sparrenbusch hill featuring standardized 1930s architecture with multiple building units spread across the site. The structures have been renovated and now serve as residential apartments in the area called Waldstadt, set within surrounding forests.
Construction of the barracks began in 1935, and the Kradschützen-Bataillon 3 moved into the new facilities in September 1937 from Erfurt. The site remained under military use during Soviet occupation from 1946 to 1993.
The former officers' mess became OFFi in 1996, a youth and cultural center that now hosts concerts, exhibitions, and workshops for the community. This transformation shows how military buildings can gain new cultural purposes and serve local residents today.
The site sits on a hillside surrounded by forest, so expect uneven terrain and woodland conditions when visiting. Access is currently limited since most buildings are now privately owned residential spaces.
During Soviet occupation, a specialized store called Russenmagazin operated on the grounds where locals could purchase exclusive Russian products. This shop served as an unusual connection point between Soviet authorities and the local community.
