St. Johannis, Lutheran church in Gehrden, Germany

St. Johannes Evangelist in Gehrden is a late Romanesque church built of fieldstone, with a west tower, a single-nave nave, a recessed square choir and a round apse. The north portal and the apse's round-arched windows survive in their original form; the south nave wall shows a blocked round-arched portal and Romanesque window arches. The west front is formed by the nave-wide tower of Gommern rubble stone, given its present height in the early Gothic period with pointed-arch sound openings and a steep gable roof.

The late Romanesque fieldstone church was built in the 13th century; its west tower received its present height and pointed-arch openings in the early Gothic period. The tower uses Gommern rubble stone, while the nave and apse are fieldstone. In 1991/1992 the exterior masonry was renovated by a specialist firm from Hesse. The church is listed as monument no. 094 71568 in Zerbst/Anhalt.

The church is dedicated to John the Evangelist, the main author of the Gospel of John, though it is occasionally confused with John the Baptist; publications such as Dehio also use the Latin form "Johannis Evangelista". The parish belongs to the Leitzkau parish office in the Elbe-Fläming church district of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.

The church stands in the middle of Gehrden on Ringstraße, enclosed by a walled churchyard. The north portal and the round-arched apse windows keep their original Romanesque forms, while a blocked round-arched portal and Romanesque window arches are visible on the south nave wall. The interior is a single hall under a flat ceiling, so the nave, recessed square choir and apse can be viewed in one sweep.

The eight-sided Gothic sandstone font from the 14th century carries eight high reliefs around its rim depicting scenes from Jesus' childhood and baptism. The tower clock, installed in 1906 by J. F. Weule of Bockenem, has dials facing north and south and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. Since 2020 its weekly movement weight runs along two rails to stop wind-induced swinging.
