St. Johannis

St. Johannis in Gehrden is a Lutheran church from the late Romanesque period with fieldstone walls and a western tower. The single-nave structure features a square choir with a round apse, constructed using stone sourced from the local region.

The structure took its present form during the early Gothic period, with the tower built from locally sourced Gommernsche rubble stones. These materials shaped the building's distinctive appearance and reflect the construction practices of that era.

The church reflects the devotional practices of its congregation through its simple, functional design that remains evident to visitors today. The space was organized to serve the community's religious needs with elements that still convey this practical approach to faith.

Access to the church is through the main western entrance, and the interior layout with its flat ceiling allows for easy movement and viewing throughout the space. Visitors can freely explore the single-nave design without navigating complex architectural obstacles.

A wooden horseshoe-shaped gallery from the 1860s runs beneath the flat interior ceiling and showcases 19th-century craftsmanship. This gallery complements the longitudinal hall design and reveals period details that remain intact today.
