Sports Walk of Fame, Walk of fame in Magdeburg, Germany

The Sports Walk of Fame is a collection of granite plaques with bronze medallions along Breiter Weg that honor outstanding athletes from Magdeburg. Each plaque displays the name, portrait, and major achievements of a person who won medals for the city through international competitions.

The Sports Walk of Fame was laid out in 2007 on Breiter Weg in Magdeburg's Altstadt on the initiative of the city marketing association Pro Magdeburg. In its first year, ten athletes were chosen from 150 proposals with the help of the newspaper Magdeburger Volksstimme. Since 2021, coaches have also been honored, including Bernd Berkhahn in 2024.

The walk was initiated by the city marketing association "Pro Magdeburg" e. V., and in 2007 ten athletes were chosen from 150 proposals submitted through the newspaper Magdeburger Volksstimme. Each granite slab carries a bronze plaque naming the honouree and a smaller one naming the sponsor who funded it.

The monument is located on Breiter Weg in the old city center and is free to visit and accessible at any time. The information on the plaques is easy to read, so visitors can stroll and explore the inscriptions at their own pace.

The monument was created not only to celebrate sports achievements but also to strengthen community identity in the city. An interesting aspect is that coaches like Bernd Berkhahn received the same recognition as the athletes themselves, showing that every success requires a dedicated team behind it.
