Klosterkirche St. Margarethen, Monastery church in Altenmarkt an der Alz, Germany.
Klosterkirche St. Margarethen is a monastery church perched on a steep forested slope with views over the Traun and Alz valleys. Two solid towers with baroque domes define its exterior, while the interior is organized with broad pillars and filled with bright light.
The church began in the 12th century as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica and was then fundamentally rebuilt in the 18th century. This transformation created the single-nave design with pillars that reflects baroque taste.
The interior shows a blend of white walls and rich decoration, with side altars and stucco work in warm tones created by craftsmen from the Wessobrunn school. Visitors can notice these handcrafted details while walking through and see how religious space was shaped here through color and form.
The church is open daily to visitors and can be entered without advance notice. The building sits at the top of the slope, so visitors should expect some steps and road access to the church is limited.
The attached monastery has brewed beer according to traditional methods since its early days, and this brewing tradition remains active today. Visitors gain a rare glimpse into how religious life and craft production existed side by side here.
