Baumburg Abbey, Augustinian monastery in Altenmarkt, Germany.
Baumburg Abbey is an Augustinian monastery on elevated ground near Traunstein featuring a Baroque church with white walls and twin towers rising into the landscape. The complex includes residential and outbuilding structures arranged around the church as its center.
Around 1107, founder Berengar II of Sulzbach brought Augustinian canons from Berchtesgaden Provostry following the death of his wife Adelheid. The church received its present Baroque form in 1755 with extensive Rococo decorations.
The Church of St. Margareta displays abundant Rococo elements inside, with fine stucco work and frescoes covering the entire interior. Visitors can see these crafted details immediately upon entering and notice how carefully every surface was designed.
The grounds are accessible daily with the church open for services and guided tours arranged through the local tourism office. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since access from parking involves a path and the grounds are hilly.
The monastery brewery has produced beer using traditional methods since 1612, making it one of Bavaria's oldest operating breweries. The handcrafted beer reflects recipes passed down through generations.
