Herrenhaus Walkenried, Historical building in Walkenried, Germany.
Herrenhaus Walkenried is a historic residential and administrative building standing near Walkenried Monastery. The structure features a grand wooden staircase, a restored slate tile roof, and a natural stone foundation.
The building was erected in 1854 and served for many years as a residence and administrative center for monastery estate tenants. It fulfilled these roles until the 1970s before experiencing several changes in ownership.
The building houses the UNESCO World Heritage Information Center with a 3D model showing how the region's cultural landscape has transformed over thousands of years. Visitors can see how human activity and natural processes have shaped the area.
The building opens to visitors Wednesday through Sunday, with the Tourist Information Office located on the ground floor. Access to the historic rooms is direct from the information office.
During restoration work, hidden historical wallpapers and friezes depicting local wildlife were discovered beneath layers of paint accumulated over decades. These findings reveal how the interior spaces were originally decorated in earlier periods.
