Great Fountain, fountain in Hannover, Germany
The Great Fountain is a central water feature in the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hannover and can shoot water up to 80 meters high. It combines a complex system of pumps with formally designed garden spaces arranged symmetrically around this focal point.
The fountain was designed in the early 18th century under the inspiration of Gottfried Leibniz and opened in 1719. When activated in 1721, it became the highest fountain in all European courts, symbolizing the technological and artistic achievement of that era.
The garden's name comes from its original location outside Hannover. Visitors can see today how the formal layout with tree-lined paths and sculptures once served to display wealth and refined taste through garden design.
The fountain displays its highest water arcs on calm, windless days. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the surrounding gardens invite leisurely exploration and offer many details to notice throughout the space.
Artist Niki de Saint Phalle decorated an adjacent grotto with mosaics, crystals, and seashells, creating a colorful retreat within the gardens. This unexpected modern art installation contrasts with the baroque surroundings and offers visitors a cool spot to rest.
