Kugelspielerin, sculpture in Berlin, Germany
The Kugelspielerin is a bronze sculpture in Berlin-Köpenick depicting a woman in motion playing with a ball, made from bronze, stone, and metal. The figure stands on a stone base with a bronze plaque providing information about the artwork.
The sculpture was created in 1897 by Berlin sculptor Walter Schott and stood in Luisenhain from 1925 onward. After disappearing in the 1950s, it was replaced in 2019 with a copy cast by a foundry in Düsseldorf.
The sculpture's name describes simply a woman playing with a ball, capturing an everyday leisure activity as public art. Visitors passing through Luisenhain encounter the figure and are reminded of how play and outdoor recreation fit into city life.
The sculpture is located in Luisenhain and is easily accessible on foot, with the park offering benches and paths for a relaxed visit. The best time for photographs is in daylight when the bronze has a warm glow.
The current figure is actually a 2019 copy cast using original molds that had been kept safe in Düsseldorf for years. This story shows how neighborhood residents came together to restore the lost artwork.
