St. Johannes

St. Johannes is a church in the Suderwich district completed in 1904 in Gothic Revival style. The building features a 75-meter tower, three naves, and bundle pillars supporting a pointed ribbed vault ceiling.

The church was completed in 1904 and replaced an earlier village church from 1820 that could no longer serve the growing population driven by coal mining in the region. Its Gothic Revival construction reflected the architectural response to the expanding needs of a rapidly developing mining community.

The church displays sculptures carried over from its predecessor, including representations of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Joseph with the Christ Child. These works show how the faithful expressed their religious devotion through carved religious figures.

The church holds regular worship services and offers online streaming for those unable to attend in person. Visitors can typically enter during public prayer times to view the interior and its architectural details.

The bell named Johannes in the tower is among the oldest bells in the entire Vest Recklinghausen region. It still rings during services and events today, connecting past and present through its sound.
