Emscher-Durchlass, Hydraulic structure in Castrop-Rauxel, Germany.
The Emscher-Durchlass is a hydraulic structure in Castrop-Rauxel that channels water beneath the Rhein-Herne Canal using three large concrete pipes. The system moves water between the Emscher River and the canal network through these parallel passages.
The original structure from the 1890s was destroyed in 1923 during the Ruhr occupation when the canal was damaged by explosions. Two subsequent versions followed, incorporating improved engineering techniques.
The structure forms part of the Route der Industriekultur, demonstrating the industrial development and water management solutions in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The structure is visible from outside and sits alongside the Rhein-Herne Canal, where you can walk along the waterside paths. Best access is from local routes that run along the canal area.
The most recent version completed in 2012 was a remarkable feat of engineering. The concrete pipe was built in a dry dock, launched like a ship, and then maneuvered into its final position.
