Recklinghausen, Hanseatic district capital in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Located at the northern edge of the Ruhr industrial region, Recklinghausen extends over fields and farms to the north while maintaining industrial areas in the south.

The settlement received its charter in 1236 and joined the Hanseatic League in 1316, later experiencing growth through coal discovery in the nineteenth century.

The city maintains an extensive collection of over 1000 Orthodox works at its Icon Museum, featuring pieces from Russia, Greece, and the Balkans.

The central station provides intercity connections while motorways A2 and A43 link the city to major regional destinations within North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Ruhrfestspiele, an annual theater festival occurring each May, presents international productions and emerged from coal miners exchanging fuel for cultural performances.
