Landschaftspark Hoheward, Public park between Herten and Gelsenkirchen, Germany

Landschaftspark Hoheward is a large recreational park between Herten and Gelsenkirchen built on two former mining hills of different heights, crisscrossed with walking and cycling routes. The site offers visitors multiple ways to explore the landscape through connected pathways and trails across the terrain.

The site grew from transforming mining waste heaps into a public recreational destination after coal extraction ended in the region. This conversion shows how the Ruhr transformed abandoned industrial areas into new community spaces.

The park includes a horizon observatory and a large sundial on its summit plateaus for astronomical observations and educational purposes.

The park is accessible through multiple entry points and can be explored on foot, by bike, or while hiking across the terrain. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths climb to higher elevations and weather in the region can change quickly.

A distinctive feature is the Dragon Bridge at the entrance, connecting the park to a neighboring city park with an eye-catching architectural design. This structure serves as a symbolic gateway between two different green spaces.
