Roots, Wooden high-rise in Elbbrückenquartier, Hamburg, Germany.
Roots is a modern timber residential building with 18 floors located in the Elbbruckenquartier along the Elbe river. The structure uses approximately 5,500 cubic meters of sustainable softwood and contains 181 housing units, combining private condominiums with public rental apartments.
Construction began in November 2020 as a pioneering project for timber architecture in Hamburg, responding to growing demand for sustainable building methods. Its completion represented a turning point in accepting mass timber construction for large residential projects.
An exhibition from the German Wildlife Foundation occupies the ground floor, offering residents and visitors hands-on learning about nature conservation. The shared space integrates environmental education into everyday building life.
The building offers underground parking and has good public transportation connections nearby. Visitors to the ground floor exhibition can easily walk from the riverbank and nearby stations.
The tower uses an advanced sprinkler tank sealing system called Curaflex C, specially designed for wooden construction. This technology continuously monitors water management and protects the timber structure from damage.
