Edelweiß-Kaserne, Military barracks in Mittenwald, Germany.
The Edelweiß-Kaserne is a military barracks in Mittenwald situated at 909 meters (2,985 feet) elevation in the Bavarian Alps. The facility includes training grounds, accommodation buildings, and administrative structures set against the backdrop of the Karwendel mountain range.
The barracks were constructed in 1937 as Jäger-Kaserne and housed Wehrmacht mountain troops during World War II. After the war, they served from 1946 onward as a shelter for several thousand displaced persons from Eastern Europe.
The barracks host the 233 Mountain Infantry Battalion, which maintains German military mountain warfare traditions through specialized alpine training and operations.
Access to the barracks is restricted as it remains an active military facility. Visitors can explore the surrounding mountain trails that are directly accessible from the surrounding area.
In the immediate postwar period, the barracks became home to approximately 3,450 displaced persons who established their own administrative system with police, hospital, and kindergarten. This temporary community demonstrated how survivors created a functioning social system under difficult conditions.
