Mittenwald, Market municipality in Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, Germany

Located at 911 meters elevation in Bavaria, Mittenwald stands along the Isar River valley, surrounded by the northern Alps mountain range.

The municipality developed as a crucial trade center due to its position near a low mountain pass, which influenced regional commerce for over two millennia.

The town maintains a distinguished violin-making tradition since the 17th century, when Matthias Klotz established the Mittenwald school of instrument craftsmanship.

Visitors can reach Mittenwald through regular regional train connections from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, located 16 kilometers to the northwest.

The pink-colored Roman Catholic church of Saints Peter and Paul rises among buildings decorated with detailed exterior wall paintings throughout the town.
